UltraEdit

The Windows Notepad utility is really useful for quickly writing any kind of text, from recipes to reminders. The problem with Notepad is that it's really limited and includes few features, especially when it comes to writing source code. Some users would like to have the line numbers displayed, so that they can quickly find an error inside their code.

Fortunately, there are Notepad alternatives which have this feature and many others. One of them is UltraEdit. This Windows application allows you to write any kind of text, having a lot of features that most average users need. After the program has been installed using its simple installer, the user is asked to associate text files with UltraEdit.

By default, only the proprietary format of UltraEdit is selected. After selecting the desired formats to be registered with UltraEdit, the user will be taken to the main interface of UltraEdit. Here, he will notice the large number of panels. One of them includes a small file manager, which resembles Windows Explorer, allowing the user to quickly import text files into the application.

There is also a toolbar available, which includes a search field, which allows the user to search on multiple search engines and websites, like Wikipedia or Yahoo Search. When writing text, one will notice the line numbers displayed and also the syntax highlighting feature, in case the user writes source code. The most popular programming languages are supported by UltraEdit, like C++ and Java.

For automating actions and also for saving time, the user can create various macros, which can perform complex sets of actions and tasks. After the text file has been created, the user can either save it in one of the many formats supported, he can upload it to FTP using the included FTP client or he can encrypt it with a password, so that nobody except him will have access to the file.
